5A- Identifying local Opportunities

Article 1
·      Title: Sketch of suspect who brutally beat high school students at FIU is released
·      Story: Two high school students were attacked while taking samples for a marine biology project on a college campus in Miami Dade. They attended Mast Academy which is a magnet high school with a campus for marine biology on the FIU campus located on the intercoastal. A man unknown man walked up to them and said hello, then five minutes later returned with a stick and started beating the young students. Both the boy and the girl were beat unconscious and are currently in ICU. The suspect is still unidentified.
·      Problem: Innocent students finding themselves in traumatizing danger.
·      Who: Students who get caught in acts of terror

·      Title: Miami commissioners tentatively agree to raise parking rates for non-residents.

·      Story: Commissioners approved a citywide increase on parking fees. The original plan was to raise the rates for public parking lots, garages and curbside spots in high demand areas such as Wynwood, Brickell, and the Design District. Finally, an altered plan got approved that allowed residents to register through an app in order to pay the original price and avoid the increased fee.
·      Problem: There will be lots of residents who are unaware of the application and they will be paying the increased rate when trying to park in their own town.
·      Who: Residents who are unaware that they need to register on an app in order to pay the original cost.

·      Title: Fire drills and false alarms are re-traumatizing Stoneman Douglas students, teachers

·      Story: Fire drills and code red drills are usually routine exercises as the new school year gets going. For the Stoneman Douglass students that is not the case. A majority of the school is traumatized by flashbacks when they hear the sound of the alarms. On top of the planned-out alarms for training purposed there have been five false alarms from students pulling the fire alarm. The false alarms are adding to the distress and people are very upset.

·      Problem: The sound of the fire alarm traumatizes Stoneman Douglas student and faculty. False alarms are caused additional and avoidable pain.

·      Who: Stoneman Douglass Students

 

Article 4

·      Title: Be Careful Opening Your Emails: Don’t Be Victim to Phishing

·      Story: This article is warning people to be aware cautious of fraudulent emails. It explains how a high percentage of emails contain malware, which is a program that attempts to alter the function of your device without your consent. It then presents red flags in order to determine whether an email is corrupt.
·      Problem: People are vulnerable to getting their accounts hacked because they use user devises that do not detect fraudulent emails.
·      Who: People who check their emails on unprotected software’s.

Article 5

·      Title: Electric scooters are on their way back to Miami. Only one commissioner is thrilled

·      Story: Miami wants to become the first large city in Florida that will offer communities scooters for transportation. Some people think it will improve the traffic problem and allow people to conveniently get to their destinations. Lots of commissioners are more worried about the unavoidable issue of safety. They think it is a big problem that there will inevitably be injuries on scooters that travel at 15 mph on populated sidewalks and streets.

·      Problem: Regulating the scooters system in order to ensure safety.

·      Who: City Commissioners

  1. Hi Bram,
    I found your phishing opportunity to be particularly interesting, as well as particularly promising. The problem of email phishing is a big one, but I feel like this issue can be tied back to the greater problem of technological illiteracy, which is something that I also think has a large number of possibilities. These possibilities may present themselves particularly in the middle-aged and older demographics, where today's technologies are not things that they grew up on like we have, but rather things they have had to learn. My roommate is currently developing a website geared towards this exact issue, he hopes to grow a business based upon technological life-coaching for those who may be the exact type to fall victim to cruel traps such as phishing scams.
