6A – Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Opportunity 1

·      I discovered this trend through thebalance.com. https://www.thebalance.com/top-usa-future-economic-trends-3305666
·      This article explains how global warming has caused a decrease in crop production which will result in an increase in the cost of food. I believe there is an opportunity to innovate farming methods or fertilizers so in order to adapt the increased temperatures of the climate.
·      Farmers
·      If a specialized fertilizer for increased temperatures is produced I think it will be relatively easy to exploit. There is a steady demand for food and farmers will do what is necessary to maximize production.
·      There are two factors that influenced me to find this opportunity. My sister is the founder of a worldwide environmental awareness movement, so environmental cases really stick out for me. My father is also a tree farmer and grows tons of trees, so I am familiar with how reliant he is on the fertilizers that he purchases.

Opportunity 2

·      This trend was found on thebalance.com. https://www.thebalance.com/top-usa-future-economic-trends-3305666
·      The article discusses how the recession delayed retirement for the older generation. It explains how since they are still working, there is less opportunity for the younger people entering the work force. That could lead to an opportunity to connect young workers with experienced workers approaching retirement. If there is someone who knows they will be retiring in near future, then they can partner with millennials and show teach them the business in order to pass it on to someone they trust.
·      Young talented working entering the work force.
·      This opportunity will be difficult to exploit. Finding an efficient way to connect and integrate the older and younger generations will not be easy.
·      I thought of this idea because my father has explained to me how the younger workers provide lots of benefits for his company. They have many skills that are applicable to today’s society, which lots older people are unaware of.

Opportunity 3

·      I found this on businessnewsdaily.com https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/7671-regulatory-issues-changes.html
·      This article explains how the supreme court passed a law that requires sales tax for online transactions. The law used to be that it was only for a physical presence but the market for e-commerce has expanded so much that there is now a sales tax for online shopping. Since these regulations are in the process of being passed it paves the way for the opportunity to provide incentive for companies to be more sustainable. If the government lowers taxes for e-commerce companies that have sustainable shipping procedures, then we could improve the environment immensely.
·      Companies that have sustainable methods.
·      I think it will be difficult to exploit because it there are lots of steps involved with regulatory changes.
·      I came up with this opportunity because I am involved in a large environmental awareness movement.

Opportunity 4

·      I found this on businessnewsdaily.com. https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/7671-regulatory-issues-changes.html
·      The article explains how President Trump Administration is applying tariffs on U.S trading partners. This could lead to the opportunity to expand the production of these imports inside the united states.
·      Companies that produce the essential goods, that used to be exchanged efficiently with allied countries.
·      This will not be too difficult to exploit. Companied just need to expand production and distribution for products that are being taxes heavily from out of the country.
·      Lots of people like focusing their current involvements. I am interested in seeking opportunity and finding the future openings.

  1. Dear Bram,
Honestly one of the best assignments I've read so far :D I believe you did a great job in talking about very unique points like retirement, cost of food due to low crop growth, and online transactions! Specifically, I really liked the points you made in opportunity one. Its crazy to think that global warming has affected us in so many different ways. Right off the bat its easy to name a few. Its affected our ecosystem, our drinking water, our oceans, our land, and now even our crops. Obviously with less crops and not enough for everyone the price of basic foods will go up. I like how you brought up your own idea on how to fix this problem. Hopefully one day specialized fertilizer for increased temperatures will exist!

  2. Hi Bram,
I also have an interest in botany and horticulture from classes I have taken here at UF, and your first opportunity is particularly interesting to me. Your ideas of innovative farming practices and fertilizers are both really interesting concepts, and I think the number of firms investigating these opportunities is testament to the quality of your ideas. Another idea to combat rising food costs due to climate change, and one that I did not see you mention, is genetically modified crops. There are all manner of possible genetic modifications that could prove invaluable in the coming years, and those aren't necessarily limited to genomic modification either, but also modification through breeding. These modifications could make crops that are more heat-resistant, less water-dependent, and even create plants with higher yields or ones that require less space to grow. All of these possibilities could help to prevent a food crisis in the coming years due to climate change.
